Ryder Robinson graduated from New York University on Thursday, May 14, and marked the moment with a family photo that put Goldie Hawn, Kate Hudson and the rest of his blended family in one frame. The photo, shared on Instagram after the ceremony, showed Ryder with Hudson, Danny Fujikawa, Hawn, Kurt Russell, Bingham and Matt Bellamy.
The image landed on the same day the university held its commencement ceremony, which is typically staged at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. For Hudson, it was a public marker of a milestone she has described as emotionally difficult, especially because Ryder has been living across the country.
Hudson said in 2024 that it was “so hard” to have Ryder so far away. She added then that all she wants is for her child to thrive and be happy, but that not hearing his voice in the morning when she is in Los Angeles is a big adjustment. That kind of language made Thursday’s graduation photo feel less like a standard celebrity family post and more like a checkpoint in a long-distance relationship between parent and son.
Ryder is Hudson’s firstborn son with Chris Robinson, whom she was married to from 2000 to 2007. Hudson has also spoken openly about the family she has built since then, saying in 2022 that love for an ex-partner can be re-established in a different way and that an ex-partner relationship can still be centered on a child. “You can have an amazing time with an ex-partner because you're really only focused on the love of your child,” she said. “For me it's like, you loved this person. That doesn't just go away, but you can re-establish a different kind of love.”
The graduation photo underscored how extended and blended that family is. Bingham, Hudson’s son with Matt Bellamy, wore a cap and gown in the picture, while Rani Rose, her child with Danny Fujikawa, was not in the frame. Hudson said in 2024 that she was not sure whether she was done having children, adding that she had a four-year-old and a kid in college and still did not have an answer. She also joked, “Then I met Danny and was like, 'Alright, I got to pump them out for him,'” and added, “He needs a boy. He needs his own boy.”
Ryder reportedly studied acting and music at NYU and also developed an interest in furniture design. That combination fits a graduation that was as much about the next step as the degree itself.
