Duke is getting a key piece back for Saturday’s game against NC State. Pellicciotta is expected to return after missing the last two games with an injury suffered against the North Carolina Tar Heels, a move that could sharpen Duke’s defensive back end and its return game on special teams.
That matters now because Duke is trying to carry momentum into a critical conference game, and the timing could not be cleaner. The Blue Devils are also heading toward a trip to South Beach next week, so this is not just another stop on the schedule. It is a chance to keep the current run moving with more of the roster available.
For Duke, the return is more than symbolic. Patrick Smith-Young has filled Pellicciotta’s role while he was out, but getting Pellicciotta back gives Duke a different level of trust in the back end and on special teams. That kind of flexibility matters when injuries have piled up and the team has had to lean on role players just to hold the line.
There are other signs that Duke is trying to widen its options as the stretch run begins. Nicholas is starting to get some touches, and he made a big play early against Boston College. Duke may keep pushing him onto the field more this week as it looks to put its best talents in position to affect the game.
The same was true on the defensive line against Boston College, where Duke’s talented defensive end made several fun plays and looked overwhelming at times for Boston College’s offensive tackles. It was the first game in which he truly seemed to deliver a game-wrecking impact. That gives Duke another reason to believe the pieces are starting to fit together at the right time, even if the workload for Pellicciotta in his first game back remains unclear.
Saturday should tell the story. If Pellicciotta looks like himself, Duke’s defense and special teams gain a real lift at the exact moment the schedule asks for it. If he is eased back in, Duke still knows it has more help on the way, and that may matter even more once the next game arrives.
