Lauren James will miss at least Chelsea’s next five matches after a scan confirmed a hamstring injury, leaving Chelsea without one of their key forwards as the schedule tightens. She was forced off after 35 minutes of Sunday’s 6-0 win at Charlton, and the club has still not named a specific return fixture for her.
The timing matters because Chelsea’s next run brings a meeting with Manchester City, and that game now comes without James. Sonia Bompastor said on Friday 6 November that the forward would be unavailable for the remainder of the current fixture block, saying: “LJ will be missing the games until the end of the block”.
That leaves Chelsea managing a stretch that begins with Everton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday 7 November and continues through a block that will stretch beyond the weekend. Chelsea lead the Women’s Super League on goal difference ahead of City, so the absence comes at a moment when every point carries extra weight.
There is at least one small boost for Chelsea. Lexi Potter is back in contention for Saturday’s match against Everton after missing the Charlton victory with a small knee injury sustained during Chelsea’s 2-0 Women’s Champions League win over Roma. Bompastor said Potter was back in the squad and in contention for the game, giving her another option while James recovers.
The larger problem is the gap left by James, because the club have only set a floor on her absence, not a finish line. “At least five matches” rules out any quick return, but it also leaves open the exact point at which she can come back into the side, and that uncertainty now hangs over both the City match and England’s Ukraine play-offs in December.
For Chelsea, the immediate task is simple enough: get through Everton without James and then navigate the rest of the block without knowing when their forward will be available again. The scan confirmed the injury. The club confirmed the absence. What remains unresolved is the match that will mark her return.
