San Diego Wave playoff path could reshuffle NWSL semifinal venues

The NWSL’s semifinal round next weekend is already leaning on a domino chain of results, and the San Diego Wave are at the center of it. If the Spirit win Sunday, Gotham win, and seventh-seeded Utah upset No. 2 seed San Diego on Friday, the Spirit would have to host their semifinal on Nov. 15 at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland, instead of Audi Field.

That matters because the Spirit begin their playoff run Sunday at 3 p.m. against Portland, with the path to a home semifinal depending on what happens in other matches before then. The Wave are one of the teams whose result can alter the bracket, which is why their game is part of the search for where the semifinal lands.

Alex Schiffer reported the venue conflict tied to that semifinal scenario, and the wrinkle is simple but awkward: Audi Field is already booked on Nov. 14 for the 2026 Secretaries’ Cup, a Division III matchup between the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, even though the same stadium is also set to host the NWSL Championship on Nov. 21. Northwest Stadium is where the Washington Commanders play, and it is the fallback if the Spirit are forced off their usual home ground.

The league is not treating the semifinal windows as flexible. Its national TV slots for the semifinals are unlikely to move, so it is exploring facilities that fit inside the times already allotted. That leaves Gotham, San Diego and the Spirit planning for alternative options based on the quarterfinal results, while the fourth-seeded Kansas City Current are the only top seed with their own stadium.

The awkward part is that the Spirit could still stay at Audi Field for a semifinal if Kansas City beats Angel City FC on Saturday and Seattle upsets Gotham on Sunday. That makes the venue plan less about one stadium problem than about a narrow set of results that can swing the entire weekend. The same scheduling squeeze has shown up elsewhere too: on Oct. 29, Game 6 of the WNBA finals tipped off at 12:30 p.m. ET because a previously scheduled game between the Hawks and Cavaliers at State Farm Arena could not be moved.

For now, the Spirit’s immediate task is to beat Portland and wait on the rest. If the results break the wrong way for Audi Field, their semifinal will not just be a home game moved across the region; it will be another reminder that in this playoff bracket, the field is only part of the equation.
