Illinois will open a new test without one of its frontcourt pieces when the No. 3 Illinois Fighting Illini host the Penn Quakers on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2026, at 8:30 p.m. ET at State Farm Center in Champaign, Illinois. David Mirkovic remains out after an emergency appendectomy on Oct. 31, leaving Illinois to sort out its rotation on the fly in its second game of the season.

That matters because Illinois has not had long to settle in. It opened its regular season against FDU on Nov. 2, and now it turns quickly to a Penn team that will try to test the Illini’s size and depth. Mirkovic’s absence does not change the fact that Illinois enters as the No. 3 team, but it does narrow the margin for error inside against a visitor that will not be overawed by the moment.

Penn brings its own scoring punch. Its leading scorer averaged 16.4 points and 7.6 rebounds last season, shot 43.2 percent from 3-point range and played 35.0 minutes a night while starting all 30 games after stops at Duke and Virginia. Michael Zanoni adds another layer, coming off a season in which he averaged 11.8 points in 30 starts, made 38.7 percent of his 3-point attempts, played 28.7 minutes a night and had a 30-point game after transferring from Mercer. If Illinois wants to keep the game from turning into a shot-making contest, it has to protect the paint and make those numbers harder to reach in the half court.

The challenge for Illinois is that its own profile suggests it can answer with size even without Mirkovic. Tomislav Ivisic averaged 10.4 points and 5.6 rebounds while starting 33 of 34 games last season, shot 48.3 percent from the field and made 31.3 percent of his 3-point attempts. Illinois also has a top newcomer who averaged 15.8 points per game as a freshman at Providence, started 22 of 31 games and averaged 3.2 assists, while Stefan Vaaks can stretch the floor after making 35.0 percent of his 3-point attempts and scoring 28 points in a game. That gives Illinois enough options to survive the absence, but not enough to ignore it.

The unanswered part is how many of those minutes and touches slide toward the rest of the frontcourt when the game starts. If Illinois controls the lane, Mirkovic’s absence may be a footnote; if Penn’s scorers get clean looks early, it becomes the detail that shapes the night.
