North Texas will put its unbeaten American Conference record on the line Saturday when it hosts Rice at DATCU Stadium in a homecoming game, with the Mean Green trying to keep their conference title path open. A win would keep North Texas tied at the top of the standings and preserve the stakes for a Nov. 14 trip to face UTSA in the Alamodome.
Tayven Jackson and the Mean Green have earned that position with steady production all season. North Texas is 6-2 overall and 4-0 in the American Conference after winning five straight games, and it has scored at least 45 points in every game since a loss to Texas State in the third week of the year. The Mean Green rank second nationally with 43.8 points per game, just behind Miami at 47.6, and Jackson ranks third nationally with 2,577 passing yards. Jahiem White is second in rushing yards with 1,047.
That offense has carried North Texas through the middle of the conference race, but the defense has done enough to keep games from slipping away. The Mean Green held Charlotte to 10 points in a win on Oct. 10 and allowed 31.9 points per game overall, while Zakye Baker led the team with 62 tackles and CJ Coombes had 56. Those numbers matter now because North Texas is not just chasing another win; it is trying to avoid dropping back into a crowded top tier before the UTSA game that could help decide how the American Conference shapes up.
Rice arrives with a different story and a narrower margin for error. The Owls are 1-7 overall and 0-4 in the American Conference, but they have come close to a second win several times this season, including a 51-49 loss to Florida Atlantic in their last game. That is the part that keeps this from looking automatic. North Texas has the better record, the better scoring profile and the better quarterback, but Rice has shown enough fight to make the opening stretch matter if the Mean Green are flat.
For North Texas, the equation is simple: beat Rice, stay perfect in conference play and arrive at Nov. 14 still tied for first. Miss here, and the game against UTSA loses some of its force before it is even played. The Mean Green have built too much momentum to let that happen quietly.
