Prince George Aston Villa Match: black track jacket marks a style shift

Prince George showed up at the Prince George Aston Villa Match in Barcelona wearing a black Aston Villa Adidas track jacket, a sharper break from the blazers he has worn to previous outings. He was there with Prince William as Aston Villa took on FC Barcelona in the Champions League on Nov. 3.

The 13-year-old’s choice of a casual jacket mattered because it was easy to spot. Prince William, by contrast, wore a navy blazer over a crewneck sweater and a rain jacket, making George’s look stand out even more as the two watched Aston Villa lose 3-0 to FC Barcelona.

Barcelona marked the visit on X and said the club was honored to welcome them to the stadium. The setting fit a public appearance that has become familiar enough to draw notice each time George steps out: a major European match, a father-son outing, and a young royal whose clothes are now watched almost as closely as the game.

That is why the jacket landed. George is a student at Eton College, where he started in September, and his match-day clothing has historically leaned formal. He wore a navy blazer at Aston Villa’s quarterfinal game in Paris in April 2025, and he and Prince William wore matching dark suits at Euro 2024 in Berlin. The shift to a black athletic jacket was modest, but it was unmistakable.

It also fit a longer pattern of George being allowed to look a little more relaxed in public. In 2022, 9-year-old George watched Craig David perform in a sparkly blue sequined tracksuit at the Platinum Party at the Palace, and William later said his son was going crazy for the outfit. More recently, William said in a 2025 episode of The Reluctant Traveler that George is better in history than he is and that he wants to create a world in which his son is proud of what they do.

For now, the black track jacket does not amount to a full wardrobe turn. But on Nov. 3, it suggested George is no longer dressing only like a child being introduced to public duty. He looked like a teenager choosing how to show up, and that may be the more revealing part of the night.
