Apple Tv Nocturne Showrunner Interview: Liev Schreiber Changed the Set

John Hlavin says Liev Schreiber did more than inherit Nocturne after Tom Hardy exited the Apple TV crime thriller. He helped define how the series was made, starting with a demand for authenticity that shaped the production from the first day on set.

That is why this interview is drawing attention now. Nocturne is an adaptation of The Sandman by Lars Kepler, and the casting shift at its center changed more than a name on the call sheet. Schreiber stars as Jonah Lynn, the veteran homicide detective at the heart of the story, with Stephen Graham playing Jurek Walter.

Hlavin told ScreenRant's Liam Crowley that Schreiber wanted authenticity to be the number one goal. He said the actor was not interested in anything that was not real, and that nearly everything Jonah does in the show comes from that place. The clearest example came on the first day of production, when Hlavin and Schreiber filmed a pilot scene in which Jonah walks through the woods and looks at a map.

The conditions were unforgiving. It was July in Pennsylvania, with about 90 degrees of heat and crushing humidity. Schreiber wore a Carhartt lined jacket for the scene, and when Hlavin offered to remove the lining to make it easier, the actor declined. He wanted the heat to be part of the moment, because that was what the character would be living through. Hlavin said that early conversation informed a lot of the adjustments they made after Hardy's exit.

That is the friction point inside the production: a major casting change could have led to a softer hand on the material, but Schreiber pushed the opposite way. Hlavin, who is also a writer and executive producer on Nocturne, said Schreiber was a frighteningly intelligent performer who kept the details in view at every turn. Instead of smoothing over the reality of the scene, he wanted the show to lean into it.

For Nocturne, that meant the lead role was not simply recast. It was recalibrated around an actor who made realism the rule and not the exception. The series still rests on Jonah Lynn's pursuit of a killer tied to Riverside Psychiatric Hospital, but the way that pursuit feels on screen has been shaped by the man playing him, and Hlavin's comments make clear that Schreiber has become one of the defining forces behind the adaptation.
