India have brought Auqib Nabi into the squad for the first three ODIs against New Zealand, giving the 29-year-old an earlier run than the one first assigned to him. He was originally named for the fourth and fifth matches, but he will now be available from the start of the five-match ODI series.
The timing matters because the series begins on Wednesday, November 4, with the first ODI in Auckland. For Nabi, it is another quick step forward after making his debut in last month’s second ODI against the West Indies, where he finished wicketless in his only ODI so far. India have kept the rest of the squad unchanged for the opening three matches, leaving the selection shift to stand out all the more.
Nabi’s case for moving up is easy to read from the numbers that followed. In India 'A' first-class cricket against New Zealand 'A', he took six wickets across two innings, a return that made him a live option when India looked again at the top of the ODI squad. That form did not rewrite the whole selection, but it was enough to bring his name forward in the schedule and give him a place in the side before the final two matches.
There is also a practical reason the adjustment lands now. Prasidh Krishna will sit out the ODI series after failing to secure a fitness clearance, and that leaves India with one less pace option for the opening stretch. Nitish Kumar Reddy is available only for the opening ODI, which makes the first three matches the most fragile part of the series from a balance point of view. India are not overhauling the group; they are trying to keep it workable while the tour begins.
The shift leaves Nabi with a clear runway. Instead of waiting until the last two ODIs in Mount Maunganui, he is in line from Auckland through Hamilton, with the second ODI on November 7 in Wellington and the third on November 10 in Hamilton. If India want to test him again in a one-day setup, they have made the decision early, and they have done it while the series is still taking shape.
India’s five-match ODI series against New Zealand opens on Wednesday, November 4, while the teams are also in the middle of a five-match T20I series that India lead 3-1 with one match left. For Nabi, the immediate question is not whether he belongs in the squad for the later games. It is whether the early promotion turns one strong India 'A' performance into a longer run in the side.
