Florida State opened its regular season Monday night against Florida A&M in Tampa, and the game immediately set the tone for what the program hopes will be a long non-conference run. It was the first official step for Luke Loucks' team after preseason scrimmage wins over Auburn and LSU, and it came with Florida State carrying the kind of early confidence that only a real game can test.
The opener matters because it begins a stretch that gives Florida State a quick read on where it stands. The Seminoles were picked seventh in the ACC preseason media poll, even though a look at the roster math put them in the bottom half of the league in budget, a gap that makes every early result feel heavier than usual. Loucks has already pointed to the team’s projected lineup of Shon Abaev, Anthony Robinson II, Kam Taylor, Sebastian Rancik and freshman Marcis Ponder as the group that will carry that burden into the regular season.
That is why Monday night in Tampa drew attention beyond the scoreline. Florida State entered the season with four ranked opponents on its non-conference schedule, a rare early test for a team still sorting out its ceiling. After the game against Florida A&M, the next stop was Troy on Friday, and after two tune-ups the schedule pointed to preseason No. 1 Florida at home, a matchup that will tell far more about Florida State than any preseason workout could.
There is also a sharper edge to the calendar later in the fall. Clemson and Florida State were already set for a Halloween weekend rivalry game, and the program leads that series 21-17. For now, though, the first question is simpler: whether the preseason promise holds once the games count, starting with the kind of night that turns a preview into a season.
The answer will arrive quickly. Florida State does not get to settle in, and that is the point. By the time Troy arrives and the Florida game comes into view, Loucks will know whether the opener in Tampa was just the beginning of a promising stretch or the first warning that this team still has a lot to prove.
