Missouri has indefinitely suspended Jaylen Carey, and he will not be with the team to start the 2026-27 season after a violation of team rules, coach Dennis Gates said Monday. The move puts one of Missouri’s most experienced frontcourt players on the sideline before the season even begins.

Carey’s name has carried extra weight at Missouri because of what he did after arriving from Tennessee. He averaged 7.4 points and six rebounds in 37 games there, then gave Tennessee a burst in the NCAA Tournament with 11 points and 10 rebounds against Iowa State in the Sweet 16, 10 points against Virginia in the Round of 32 and eight points against Michigan in the Elite Eight.

That makes the timing of this suspension especially important for Missouri, which is looking ahead to a road game against Tennessee on Wednesday, Jan. 13, in Knoxville. The matchup is set for 7 p.m. ET and will air on either ESPN2 or ESPNU, and Carey’s status for it remains unresolved despite the suspension being announced now.

Gates did not spell out the exact team rule Carey violated, only that the discipline stemmed from a rules breach. For Missouri, that leaves a simple but awkward gap: Carey is out for now, but the school has not said whether the suspension will last long enough to keep him from facing his former team in January.

The broader backdrop is a player whose path has already been unusually restless. Carey is now at his fourth school in four years, beginning at James Madison, moving to Vanderbilt to follow Mark Byington, then transferring to Tennessee before landing at Missouri. The Tigers went 20-13 last season, earned a 10-seed in the NCAA Tournament and lost to Miami in the Round of 64, so every roster loss matters as they try to build forward.

For Missouri, the next answer is not whether Carey was disciplined. It is how long the suspension lasts, because that will decide whether he watches the Tennessee game from the bench or walks back into Knoxville in a Missouri uniform.
