Maurizio Sarri said Atalanta are trying to lay the foundations of a new cycle, and he expects the side to get closer to full strength before Monza. Speaking on the eve of the Parma match, he said the club is still living through an injury emergency, but he is hopeful that two or three players can return in time for the next league game.

The timing matters because Atalanta go into a run of three matches in six days, and Sarri framed that stretch as a test of whether the squad can hold together while the injury list eases. He said the team has been among the best in physical data over the last four or five league rounds, yet the results have been shaped by absences and by the fact that the group is still trying to settle into a new structure.

That is why Sarri did not speak only about recovery dates. He linked the short-term plan to the broader rebuild, saying the aim is to create the basis of a cycle that can last. The message was clear: Atalanta are not just waiting for bodies to return, they are trying to turn a difficult phase into something more stable before the schedule tightens again.

There is still a contradiction inside that picture. Sarri said the physical numbers after Frosinone were fine even though the match had only 41 minutes of effective playing time, and he noted that Atalanta average 59 minutes of effective play. At the same time, he said the club is studying why so many injuries have arrived 10 to 15 days after national-team matches and is considering a different workload after the next break. The data may look strong, but the squad is still being broken by the calendar.

He also tied the defensive problems to the same instability. After the 4-4 draw with Frosinone, he said Atalanta need to be shorter, more compact, and higher when they defend, because opponents have been entering the penalty area too easily. The back line has been heavily changed, with several players inserted after limited training time, and that has left the team exposed just as it is trying to settle into a new phase. On top of that, he said Parma have lost fewer matches than other lower-table sides, defend in a low block, counterattack well, and have the worst defense in that group, which makes the game a test of patience as much as structure.

For Sarri, the next checkpoint is Monza, where he hopes to have two or three returning players available. Until then, Atalanta must absorb the schedule, protect the points, and prove that the new cycle he described is already more than a plan on paper.
