Andrea Kimi Antonelli became Formula One world champion in Mexico on 01.11.2026 after finishing third, with Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen ahead of him at the flag. The result ended the title fight on the spot and gave Italy its first Formula One champion again after 73 years.

What made the moment land so hard for Antonelli was the way he got there. He was pushed into a finish that had to be managed lap by lap, and the race was reshaped after a Safety Car was deployed when Lindblad hit the wall. That changed the rhythm of the chase, reset the gaps and left Antonelli close enough to the crown to control the final stretch rather than simply attack for it.

Antonelli did not sound like a driver trying to explain a statistical feat. He sounded overwhelmed. “Ce l'abbiamo fatta, senza la Mercedes e la mia famiglia non sarei qui. Mi terrò questo momento per sempre, sono senza parole. Io sul podio con Verstappen ed Hamilton? Rende tutto più speciale, veramente incredibile. Io nervoso? Questo weekend ho sentito tensione, ora sono felicissimo. Grazie a tutti,” he said, before adding: “Ce l'abbiamo fatta, grazie a tutti, grazie a tutti.”

The wider race kept the title picture tense to the end. Hamilton was chasing Verstappen but could not stay in the slipstream for long because of the high temperatures, while Leclerc carried visible wear on his tyres and held fourth place ahead of Norris. Behind that fight, Antonelli’s path to the championship became a matter of staying composed under pressure rather than needing a victory of his own.

That is what makes this title feel finished rather than merely won. Antonelli did not take the championship by dominating Mexico; he took it by finishing third in a race that turned messy, then holding that position long enough for the arithmetic to close. The next question is not whether the title is his. It is how much larger this result becomes once the season’s final accounting is complete.
