FC Porto can turn a perfect nine-game league start into 10 on Saturday, and the next step comes against Estoril Praia at the Dragão. A win would make Francesco Farioli’s side only the sixth team to open a Liga season with 10 straight victories.
That is the immediate prize, and it is a serious one. Porto have scored 21 league goals and conceded four, with the league’s tightest defense helping them move through the opening rounds without a slip. The run has already included home wins over Alverca, Arouca, Moreirense and Benfica, plus away victories at Rio Ave, Académico de Viseu, Casa Pia, Marítimo and Gil Vicente.
The scale of a 10th straight win becomes clearer when placed beside the league’s biggest starts. Benfica opened 1972/73 with 23 consecutive wins, while Sporting began 1990/91 and 2024/25 with 11. Porto’s own club benchmark is 13 straight wins from 1939/40, a run that ended in the 14th round with a 4-3 loss to Sporting in Lumiar after Mourão struck late.
That is the point that keeps this from being a simple chase for a number. Even if Porto beat Estoril Praia, the team would still fall short of matching its own best league start and would not move into the competition’s top five by that measure. The gap between a historic opening and the club record is small in words but still real on the table.
For Farioli, that leaves Saturday with a clear value and a clear limit. A win would push FC Porto into double digits and deepen a start that has already set the pace in the championship. It would also leave the next question hanging in plain sight: how far can this run still go before it meets something stronger than form?
