Kansas heads to Fort Worth on Saturday afternoon with a chance to pull back to.500, but the trip comes with an uneasy question that could shape everything. Isaiah Marshall has been listed on Big 12 availability reports this week, leaving Kansas to prepare for TCU without knowing whether its quarterback will be available at Amon G. Carter Stadium.
The setup is simple enough on paper and difficult enough on the field. Kansas just beat Baylor 25-24 and now faces a TCU team that shares its overall and league records, but the Horned Frogs have built one of the Big 12’s best defenses. They lead the league in total defense at 264.3 yards allowed per game and in scoring defense at 13.9 points allowed per game, and no Big 12 team gives up fewer total third downs or a lower rate of third-down conversions.
That is why Kansas is searching for answers even before the game begins. Andy Kotelnicki said the Jayhawks know they have their hands full again, pointing to a secondary that covers well and a front that creates problems at every level. On the other side, D.K. McDonald said Kansas will have to adjust on the fly to a new coach with different priorities and emphases, a reminder that TCU’s staff has already changed this week after A.J. Ricker was fired following the loss to West Virginia.
The personnel on the defensive side still gives TCU a clear identity. Hudson Hooper leads the Frogs with 41 tackles, Jamel Johnson has 40, and Kylin Jackson has forced three fumbles and recovered two. Even with that strength, TCU’s offense remains a concern: it ranks among the worst in the Big 12, the run game sits 123rd in the country, and the line has allowed 20 sacks, the highest total in the conference.
That is the opening Kansas will try to press. Jaden Craig has thrown for 2,066 yards with 11 touchdowns and six interceptions, and McDonald said TCU’s pride will make the matchup more than just a look at the tape. Kansas has also rarely succeeded in Fort Worth in past years, which makes Saturday less about reputation than execution. If Marshall is cleared, the Jayhawks can lean into that opportunity; if he is not, they will have to find a way to win anyway.
