Northwestern Vs Oregon: Ducks adjust after Moore injury ahead of Halloween clash

Oregon will spend Halloween in Eugene trying to steady an offense that has lost Dante Moore for the season and changed play-callers, while Northwestern arrives with a 6-1 record and a fresh 42-14 win over Rutgers. The matchup still opened with Oregon as a slight home favorite, but the shape of the game changed when Moore went down against USC and Drew Mehringer was relieved of his duties after the loss to Illinois.

That is why Northwestern vs Oregon is drawing attention now. Northwestern is ranked in the Poll at No. 20 or better, and its trip west comes with College Football Playoff hopes still in view. Oregon, meanwhile, enters at 4-3 after falling 21-10 to Illinois, a result that put more pressure on an offense already forced to adjust on the fly.

The change is not just about who is standing on the sideline. Oregon promoted assistant quarterbacks coach Jay Johnson to interim play-caller, and he has called plays throughout his coaching career. One of the clearest examples came at Michigan State in 2021, when Kenneth Walker III led an offense that averaged 31.8 points per game under Johnson. That gives Oregon a reason to believe the structure can hold, even without Moore.

But the numbers leave plenty of room for doubt. Oregon has allowed 3.65 yards per carry and 197.6 passing yards a game, while also producing 2.14 sacks per game and 27 quarterback hurries. Against Illinois, the Ducks still rushed for 180 yards at 5.83 yards per carry, which suggests the ground game can travel even if the passing game has to be rebuilt around a new voice and a thinner receiver group.

Northwestern has its own issue to solve after giving up 244 rushing yards at 6.26 yards per carry against Rutgers. That came after a stretch in which the Wildcats held their next three opponents after the Indiana game to 90 rushing yards or fewer, so the Rutgers result looks less like a trend than a warning. If Northwestern can recover that earlier level of resistance, it can force Oregon into the kind of game the Ducks would rather avoid.

That is the friction inside the matchup: Oregon is at home, ranked in the Poll and still a slight favorite, even though the Ducks are coming off a loss and operating without the quarterback who was supposed to drive the offense. Northwestern brings the cleaner record, but Oregon brings the more unsettled one. On Halloween in Eugene, the team that adapts faster may matter more than the one that arrived with the better resume.
