Miami was installed as an 8.5-point home favorite for Monday’s 7:30 p.m. ET game against Dallas at Kaseya Center, a number that put the Heat in the spotlight even though they were still chasing their first win of the season.

The line matters because Miami had opened 0-3 in the Giannis Antetokounmpo era, and the contrast with the market was stark: the Heat ranked 27th in both offensive efficiency, at 105.1 points per 100 possessions, and defensive efficiency, at 121.4 points allowed per 100 possessions. Yet Dallas was carrying its own uncertainty, with Naji Marshall out because of illness and Cooper Flagg questionable Monday morning with a shoulder injury.

That made the matchup as much about availability as form. Dallas had gone 4-8 without Flagg during his rookie season, and Monday’s spread came with a total of 239.5, a number that fit a series that has often leaned lower than expected. The teams had gone under in four of their last six meetings and in six of their last nine, while Miami had also won three of the Mavericks’ last four visits and went 26-15 at home last season.

The one clear return in the Dallas backcourt was Kyrie Irving, who was no longer on the injury report after sitting out Saturday’s loss to San Antonio for injury management and was expected to play tonight. Even so, he had averaged just 2.5 assists through two appearances, had not gone over three assists in either one and had not played more than 25 minutes in a game so far, while the minutes limit reflected a slow return from an ACL tear that kept him out for 19 months.

That is where the spread gets harder to read. Miami was being priced like a sturdier home side than its record and efficiency numbers suggested, while Dallas arrived with enough absences and minute restrictions to keep the board moving right up to tip-off. If Flagg is ultimately cleared, the market gets one shape; if he is not, the game settles into a different one before the ball is even tossed at 7:30 p.m. ET.
