Jalen Coker came back from a hamstring injury on Sunday and gave the Panthers a late lift that helped beat the Philadelphia Eagles 25-14. On third-and-9 from the Panthers' own 10-yard line late in the third quarter, he lined up in the backfield as a decoy, leaked out and caught a 32-yard gain that moved Carolina near midfield.

That one snap mattered because the Panthers had managed only 229 yards of total offense through three-and-a-half quarters and were 3-of-10 on third down before the throw to Coker. They finished with 170 more yards after that play and went 4-of-7 on third downs the rest of the way, turning a tight game into a more controlled finish.

For Carolina, the play also fit a bigger idea that had been taking shape only over the last couple of weeks. The staff had been working on using Coker in backfield route concepts, and the result looked less like a gadget and more like a glimpse of what the Panthers think he can do when defenders lose track of him. David Moore's reaction captured the mood in the huddle: What can't he do?!

Dave Canales said the pass game group, including Brad Idzik, had been working on it with Coker and thought the matchup was there. Bryce Young said the line picked up the pressure, he bought a little extra time, and Coker did the rest, adding that there is no surprise when he wins from that spot because he is simply that versatile. It was Coker's first game back since exiting in Week 3 with a hamstring injury, after sitting out Week 4 and getting extra rest during the Week 5 bye.

The unanswered question is how often the Panthers will keep putting him there, but Sunday showed why they want the option. Coker's return did more than add a target; it gave Carolina a play it can lean on when a drive needs saving and a lead needs protecting.
