Week 8 blew open the top of the rankings, with seven ranked teams losing and UCF delivering the weekend’s biggest shock by upsetting No. 2 BYU in double overtime. The chaos did not stop there. Five unranked teams beat ranked opponents, and only three undefeated FBS teams were left standing when the dust settled.
That is why the CFB coaches poll after Week 8 is suddenly the search everyone is making. No. 1 Miami, No. 9 UCLA and No. 10 Utah survived the week unbeaten, while No. 7 Ole Miss, No. 8 Texas Tech, No. 11 Tennessee, No. 14 Houston, No. 15 Iowa and No. 16 USC all went down. It is the first time in the Division 1-A and Division 1-AA era that three or fewer undefeated FBS teams remained through Oct. 24, a jolt that makes the next update feel like a reset rather than a routine shuffle.
Utah’s win over Houston captured the night’s pressure and the stakes inside one game. Houston led 3-0 at halftime and carried a 13-7 advantage into the fourth quarter, then still lost 21-13 after Utah scored two touchdowns. The turning point came with just over two minutes left, when Utah’s defense forced a fumble from Connor Weigman and shut the door on Houston’s last real chance. That result mattered beyond the final score because it was one of the losses that helped push the week to seven ranked defeats.
Texas added another layer to the wreckage by beating Ole Miss 34-27 and avoiding a third straight loss after defeats to Oklahoma and Florida in the previous two weeks. Put together, the results left the rankings looking battered from the top down, with undefeated teams shrinking and several ranked programs absorbing losses in the same Saturday window. The next Poll should reflect that damage, and the late-night Utah-Houston finish was the last piece the update needed before voters sort out who moved up, who slid, and who got overtaken by the weekend’s chaos.
