The Browns enter Week 7 at 4-2 and are being viewed as the stronger side against the Tennessee Titans because their defense has carried them this far. Cleveland has turned a shaky start into one of the NFL season's most surprising records, and that is why the Browns vs Titans prediction is leaning toward the home side this afternoon.
The numbers explain the market. The Browns are allowing 20.3 points per game, rank eighth in the league against the pass, and have held up even after losing both of their road games. They opened with a loss to the Jaguars, then won three straight over the Buccaneers, Panthers and Steelers before beating the Ravens at the buzzer last week. That run has made Cleveland look more complete than it did in Week 1, when Deshaun Watson was part of an offense that looked predictably atrocious.
That is also why the betting angle is built around defense rather than offense. Cleveland does not have a great running game, and the offense can still vanish for long stretches, as it did in a 17-12 loss to the Jets when the Browns failed to score a touchdown. But the defense has kept the team in games anyway, allowing just 112.3 rushing yards per game and giving bettors a reason to trust the Browns even when the offense does not.
The Titans arrive with a much different profile. They won their first game of the season after starting 0-4, but they remain a difficult team to back with confidence. Their losses have piled up against the Jets, Eagles, Giants, Ravens and Texans, and three of those five defeats came by one score. They are not a very good football team, but they have at least shown enough to stay alive late in games. That matters here because the Browns have won by leaning on control, not comfort.
What makes this matchup interesting is the gap between Cleveland's record and Cleveland's offense. The Browns have been surprisingly good, but not because they are explosive. They are better because their defense keeps shortening games and their mistakes have not broken the season yet. If that formula holds against the Titans, the Browns should stay on the right side of Week 7. If it does not, Watson and the offense will once again be asked to bail out a team that has spent most of the year winning despite itself.
