Bear Bachmeier and the Byu Quarterback Debate After Notre Dame

Bear Bachmeier turned a Saturday night into a referendum on the future of BYU’s quarterback history. The 20-year-old sophomore scored three touchdowns in the first half against Notre Dame and then helped finish off the then-second-ranked Irish with the kind of throw that changes how people talk about a player.

That throw came on BYU’s final winning drive, when Bachmeier laid a low outside pass to Walker Lyons for the touchdown that sealed it. He had already done damage with his legs, scoring twice on runs, and he also found the end zone once on the receiving end of a double pass as BYU built an 11-point lead in the first half.

That is why the search now turns from one game to something bigger. Bachmeier has played only 20 games at BYU, which is not enough time to write him into the same company as Virgil Carter, Gary Sheide, Gifford Nielsen, Marc Wilson, Jim McMahon, Steve Young, Robbie Bosco, Ty Detmer, Steve Sarkisian, Max Hall, Taysom Hill and Zach Wilson. But his latest performance made that list feel less like hyperbole and more like a live argument.

There was also a clean test inside the game that mattered. Doubters wondered whether he could spin the ball downfield and layer throws into tight spaces against one of the best defenses in the country. He could. That is the kind of evidence that makes a quarterback eminent, and it is why he has maneuvered into being favorably compared with other Cougar quarterback greats.

Still, one game does not make a career. Bachmeier’s showing against Notre Dame sharpened the conversation because it matched production with poise, but the comparison to BYU legends remains early and unfinished. What comes next is not a coronation so much as a long chance to prove that this night was not a peak, but a beginning.
