Week 8 opened with only four undefeated FBS teams left in the 2026 season, cutting the perfect-field chase to Miami, BYU, UCLA and Utah after Week 7. That is the number that matters now: 136 teams began with a shot at perfection, and only four are still standing.

Stan Becton, who joined NCAA.com in 2021 and has covered college football, FCS football, track and field, cross country and HBCU beats since then, is tracking the race as it tightens. Miami held on in double overtime against unranked Florida State and moved to No. 1 for the first time since 2002. BYU kept its run alive with a last-minute win over then-No. 2 Notre Dame, then moved into a stretch of Big 12 games after finishing last season as the conference runner-up. UCLA beat Oregon in Eugene for the first time since 2004, and Utah survived Colorado by three.

The rankings give the picture more weight. Miami, BYU, UCLA and Utah were all in the Top 25 Poll after Week 7, and the order of the unbeaten field has become part of the story as much as the record itself. UCLA now has only one ranked opponent left, with Southern California waiting in the finale, while BYU has no more nonconference games on its schedule.

Utah is the team that complicates the cleanest reading of the tracker. It remained unbeaten after a three-point win that was far tighter than its earlier work, because every previous victory had come by at least 14 points. The Utes are still perfect, but the margin served as a reminder that an undefeated record can look a little less certain from one week to the next.

That is where the chase stands now: four perfect teams, each with a different path ahead, and each one one bad Saturday away from turning a rare season into a memory. Miami, BYU, UCLA and Utah all still have games to play, and the number left to track can shrink fast from here.
