South Carolina beat Tennessee 27-24 on Saturday, finishing the game with a walk-off field goal that turned a tight SEC matchup into a loss for the No. 11 team in the country. The Vols led 21-17 at halftime, but South Carolina closed stronger and left with the result that mattered most.
Mazeo Bennett, who had once been committed to Tennessee before joining South Carolina, set the tone on the Gamecocks’ first possession by scoring on a screen pass. South Carolina then pushed the lead to 14-0 when LaNorris Sellers broke free for a 31-yard touchdown run, a start that made the underdog label hard to ignore even with Tennessee’s ranking.
Tennessee answered with a sequence that showed why the game stayed alive deep into the fourth quarter. DeSean Bishop finished one drive with a touchdown, TJ Metcalf picked off a pass for the Vols, DaSaahn Brame scored on the ground and Mike Matthews added an 8-yard wildcat carry. By halftime, Tennessee had recovered enough to take a 21-17 lead and put the pressure back on South Carolina.
That edge did not hold. Both teams opened the second half with negative-yardage drives, and the pace of the game tightened into the sort of back-and-forth contest that can flip on one snap. South Carolina, which entered at 3-3, kept finding just enough to stay within reach before the final kick decided it.
What made the result sting for Tennessee was the way it unfolded after that halftime lead. The Vols had the ranking, the control and the advantage, yet still walked off the field on the wrong side of a game that South Carolina never let get away. In a matchup that already felt like one of the best in the SEC, the final margin was small enough to fit on a scoreboard and large enough to change how both teams will remember Saturday.
