Kevin Pollak has recalled a sharp little beat from the set of A Few Good Men: Tom Cruise finished a courtroom scene with Jack Nicholson, then punched Nicholson in the shoulder after the take. Pollak said Nicholson had tried to break Cruise’s focus with an exaggerated clown face, but Cruise stayed in character long enough to land the scene first.
That memory is getting fresh attention because it adds a new layer to one of the most famous confrontations in the 1992 film, a courtroom showdown that has been replayed for years. Pollak said Nicholson was close to the camera during the intense take, giving the moment a live-wire feel that made the distraction attempt even more pointed.
Pollak described Nicholson making “the most ridiculous clown face you’ve ever seen” as he tried to throw Cruise off. Cruise did not bite. He finished the scene, then punched Nicholson in the shoulder, and both men burst into laughter afterward. The detail matters because it shows how controlled the performance was even when one star tried to rattle the other in the middle of a high-stakes exchange.
The scene itself comes from A Few Good Men, directed by Rob Reiner and written by Aaron Sorkin, a film about a military lawyer defending two Marines accused of killing a fellow serviceman. Pollak’s recollection turns that well-known courtroom sequence into something more intimate: not just a famous movie moment, but a private exchange between two actors who were clearly having fun with the pressure of it.
Cruise later offered his own memory of the shoot in a 2025 conversation with the British Film Institute, saying he could not wait to do the scene with Nicholson and calling him “very much an actor’s actor,” with a presence off-camera that was “very giving and gracious.” Taken together, the two accounts leave a clean impression of what happened on set: Nicholson tried to crack him, Cruise held the line, and the payoff was a shoulder punch and laughter when the camera stopped rolling.
