Gabriela Rodríguez Tezoco died Tuesday after falling from The Pendulum, a carnival ride operating at the Traditional Cabo San Lucas Holidays in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur. She flew out of her seat while the ride was in motion, fell to the ground and was taken to the hospital, where she died.

The death turned a local celebration into a scene of shock, and it raised the question that now matters most: what made a rider come loose from a moving attraction. A video showed Rodríguez Tezoco flying off the ride, and Mayor Christian Agúndez Gómez said, “It could have been any of us.”

The H. XV Ayuntamiento de Los Cabos said the young woman injured in the amusement ride area later died despite the efforts of medical personnel. It said the Attorney General's Office of the State of Baja California Sur will determine the causes of the incident and establish accountability under the law, while the Municipal Government of Los Cabos will cooperate fully and provide support to the family.

That is where the public record stops and the investigation begins. The statement from the municipality does not explain whether The Pendulum met inspection or safety requirements before the incident, and it does not say what failed as Rodríguez Tezoco was thrown from the ride. The visible sequence captured in the video suggests a sudden mechanical or restraint failure, but that will be for investigators to determine.

The case lands amid broader safety concerns around amusement park rides, even if serious harm remains rare. An estimated 118 serious injuries occurred at amusement parks in North America in 2024, the IAAPA has said the chance of being seriously injured on a fixed-site ride at a U.S. amusement park is 1 in 15.5 million rides taken, and KCRA-TV has reported that about 60% of ride injuries are tied to guest-related factors such as not following rules or having a medical condition. A separate death involving Hassan Kariem, who died after flying out of a roller coaster at Six Flags in Georgia, shows how quickly a ride meant for entertainment can turn fatal.

For Rodríguez Tezoco’s family, the next step is not speculation but a formal answer from the state prosecutor’s office. The cause of the fall, and whether anyone bears legal responsibility for it, is now the question that will decide what this death means beyond one terrible Tuesday in Los Cabos.
