LeBron James has switched teams ahead of the 2026–27 NBA season, leaving the Los Angeles Lakers after his contract expired and making the Philadelphia 76ers his new home. The move sends him across conferences and into a new setting just as the Lakers begin reshaping their roster.

The reason the search is heating up now is simple: James has already logged his first minutes in Philadelphia. He played 34 minutes in his official debut, finished with 14 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists, and helped the 76ers beat the New York Knicks 106–100 on the road. Afterward, he said he is still getting his rhythm down with his new teammates.

That debut matters because it shows how quickly the fit is being tested. James is not joining a blank slate. Philadelphia already featured Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, and Jaylen Brown was added as well, turning the roster into one with plenty of scoring options and very little room for a slow start. For James, the move is less about learning a new role than about proving he can still drive a contender forward in a crowded lineup.

For the Lakers, the change marks the start of a gradual rebuild around Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. That reset becomes visible right away this week, with the 2026–27 campaign set to open on Wednesday, October 21, at Crypto.com Arena against the Golden State Warriors. Los Angeles then hosts the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday, October 23, before playing the Utah Jazz on Sunday, October 25, at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City.

The unanswered question is not whether James can still produce. He already did that in Philadelphia. It is how the 76ers balance another star in a group that already had Embiid and Maxey, and whether the Lakers’ new direction can settle quickly enough before the schedule starts to bite.
