Helen Chiang is leaving Microsoft today, just months after being named Xbox’s first chief operating officer. The move ends a 21-year run at the company and removes the executive who had been put in charge of helping pull Xbox’s businesses into one operating model.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced the departure in an internal memo today, saying, “Helen Chiang is leaving Microsoft today. I’m grateful for her years of service and wish her well.” Chiang had reported directly to Sharma after being promoted in July to the newly created role.

That role was meant to carry end-to-end P&L responsibility across content, hardware, platform and services, a broad mandate for a business that was in the middle of a reset. Chiang had earlier led Minecraft before the promotion, making her one of the company’s most familiar internal operators and a logical choice for a job designed to bring separate parts of Xbox under one roof.

Now those duties are being split up between other Xbox leaders for the time being. Sharma said, “We’ll share more on COO leadership as plans are finalized.” The change leaves Xbox without the executive who had been expected to centralize day-to-day business oversight just after the company created the post.

Microsoft declined to discuss why Chiang is leaving, with Kari Perez saying, “We don’t discuss individual personnel matters.” Perez added, “We’re grateful for Helen’s years of service and wish her well.” That silence makes the departure more notable, because the company is not just losing a senior executive — it is also revisiting a leadership structure it put in place only a few months ago.

The unanswered question is not whether Xbox can keep moving; it is who will ultimately carry the COO job, or whether the company decides it no longer needs one. For now, the search around the Helen Chiang Xbox COO departure is really a search for what comes next inside Microsoft’s latest reset.
