Stephanie March is heading back to Law & Order: Special Victims Unit as Alexandra Cabot, with her return set for the upcoming ninth episode of season 28. The episode’s exact release date has not been announced, but the comeback itself is now locked in.
That makes the search interest easy to understand. March has not been seen on the show since 2018, when her last appearance as the ADA aired in a season 19 episode, and her return brings back one of SVU’s most familiar recurring figures. She first joined the series in season 2 in 2000, spent three seasons alongside Mariska Hargitay before leaving early in season 5, and later returned in season 10.
Cabot’s path on the show has never been straightforward. After her first run, she was forced to fake her death and enter Witness Protection after trying to convict a gang member for rape. March then came back as Cabot in season 10, moved on after a two-season stint to work for the International Criminal Court, and later made guest appearances in seasons 13 and 19.
The significance of the new return goes beyond nostalgia. March appeared on 97 episodes of the long-running NBC series, making her the third-longest-running ADA on the show, and her comeback arrives as SVU moves toward a milestone 600th episode, which is slated to air on Nov. 12 as the sixth episode of season 28. The ninth episode will come later than that, but the network has not yet said when.
The gap between the announcement and the airdate is the part fans are still waiting on, along with the reason Cabot is back this time. March signaled in 2024 that she would be happy to return if the opportunity came up, saying she would not say no to the chance and the cash prizes. Now the opportunity is real; the only missing piece is the date.
For viewers who have followed Cabot’s long arc, that is enough to make the return count. March is back, the episode is set, and SVU is saving one more familiar face for later in season 28.
