Sony’s Ray of Blu-ray future fades as UBP-X700/K stops shipping

Sony has stopped shipping its UBP-X700/K Blu-Ray DVD player, and the company’s webstore now lists it as out of stock with no restock planned. The move leaves the last budget Sony option for 4K discs in limbo and pushes buyers toward the remaining shrinking pool of dedicated players.

The timing matters because the UBP-X700/K had become the model many consumers reached for when they wanted a simple disc player instead of a streaming box. It is completely sold out on Walmart and Best Buy, and Sony’s own Japan-centric webstore says it will not be restocked.

That matters even more because Sony’s players have been cited by several outlets as some of the best available for the average consumer. The UBP-X700/K sat in the sweet spot: affordable enough to be a mainstream buy, but still built for people who wanted 4K discs rather than a subscription library that can disappear overnight.

There is still some life left in the category, but not much. As of the time of writing, a few Sony 4K models are still on sale, and Panasonic pushed out a DMR-4X1010 player back in September that doubles as a 4K broadcast tuner. Magnetar also released the Ultima this year, though Magnetar Audio wants buyers to spend $12,000 on it, which puts that machine in a different universe from Sony’s old budget player.

The friction point is obvious. Sony’s PlayStation 5 consoles can still play Blu-ray movies, but they do not support Dolby Vision or Dolby Atmos for movies, so they are not a clean replacement for people who care about those formats. That leaves the company’s disc strategy looking narrower by the week, especially after Sony told it will not be attending CES 2027 and as the next PlayStation console seems unlikely to include any optical drive at all.

Sony is now tied to a market it appears to be leaving behind. The company is associated with PlayStation’s plan to kill off game disc production in 2028, and the broader pattern is the same: a steady retreat from the physical-media hardware it once helped define. The unanswered question is no longer whether the UBP-X700/K is gone for good. Sony has already said it will not be restocked, and that makes this look less like a pause than the end of the road.
