Ariana Grande has swapped her signature high ponytail for a flipped bob, revealing a neck-length cut on Instagram on Oct. 22. The new look sits above her shoulders, falls darker than her usual style and ends in a neat outward flip.

The reveal matters because Grande has worn that ponytail for around 14 years, making the change a visible break from the image fans have associated with her for most of her career. It also lands just as she is expected to begin promotion for Focker-in-Law, which makes the timing hard to miss.

Brandon Pietsch handled the haircut and coloring, then posted that “The ponytail is taking a hiatus” and said Grande was in her bob era. The selfies, set against a plain white wall, did the rest: they turned a routine salon change into a clear reset.

The shift also fits the way Grande has treated hair as part of the story she tells around her work. During the Wicked press tour, she leaned into Glinda the Good’s blonde hair in 2024, then went darker for the 2025 Wicked sequel. In November, she said it was fun to play with the storytelling on the press tour, adding that the first run was about celebrating Glinda in a more on-the-nose way through clothes, blonde hair and everything, while now she could show up as the actress who played her and lean into the darker tones of the movie.

That makes the bob less like a random makeover and more like the next move in a pattern Grande has already explained herself. She has said she likes to play with hair and makeup and fashion, but she has also kept the ponytail for about 14 years, so every departure from it carries meaning.

What comes next is promotion for Focker-in-Law, and multiple outlets say she will be part of that press tour. Whether the bob lasts for the full run or turns out to be a short-lived change is the unanswered part, but for now Grande has made the break plainly: the ponytail is on hold, and the new look is the headline.
