The Cavaliers exercised Jaylon Tyson's fourth-year rookie scale team option on Oct. 20, locking in his $5.64 million salary for 2027/28. Tyson was already guaranteed $3.66 million for the coming season, so the move mainly secures Cleveland's control over him for one more year beyond that.

It is the kind of decision that usually matters because it narrows the team’s choices, but in Tyson's case the timing also reflects how much he changed the picture last season. The 23-year-old 6-foot-6 guard/forward went from a quiet rookie to a regular part of the rotation in 2025/26, averaging 26.9 minutes and starting 42 of the 66 regular-season games he played for Cleveland.

Tyson backed that role with production. In the regular season, he averaged 13.2 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists while shooting.493 from the field,.446 from 3-point range and.738 at the line. That was enough to make him look like more than a reserve piece, and it is one reason the Cavaliers did not wait to commit to the fourth year of his rookie deal.

The postseason was a different story. Tyson averaged just 4.1 points and 2.8 rebounds in 12.7 minutes across 17 playoff appearances, and his shooting fell to.362/.237/.667. That drop did not erase the regular-season progress, but it did leave a sharper question about how much of a load he can really carry when the games tighten.

For now, Cleveland has answered the contract question and left the basketball one open. Tyson is now on track to become extension-eligible in July 2027, and if no new deal is done next summer, he would reach restricted free agency in July 2028. With the Cavaliers having lost depth pieces over the offseason, his role this fall should be one of the clearest roster tests on the board.
