Jarrett Allen said at shoot around that he intends to play tonight, clearing up the biggest question hanging over the Cavaliers as they open the season against the 76ers.
That matters because Allen is part of Kenny Atkinson’s gameplan, and his availability shapes the first-night frontcourt picture. If he is active, Jaylon Tyson would slide back to the bench unit, while Merrill and Hezonja already have guaranteed spots in the rotation. Atkinson has said he wants to play a 10-man rotation this season instead of his usual 11, though the early part of the year could still include 11 players getting minutes.
The uncertainty was real enough that Allen’s status became the first thing to watch on a night when the Cavaliers were already trying to sort out their opening mix. The group has had a long stretch together, spending the summer around one another at Cleveland Guardians playoff games, and that kind of continuity usually helps once the games start. Allen’s decision to push ahead keeps that continuity intact for the opener.
There is still one layer unresolved: being available is not the same as being fixed into the starting group. The early rotation could still shift, with Tyrese Proctor or Thomas Bryant in line to see minutes, and Ernest Udeh Jr. has a path to bump Thomas Bryant because of his rebounding. Nae'Qwan Tomlin will not be part of that equation after being diagnosed with a lower back stress reaction that is expected to keep him out for 3-4 weeks.
For tonight, though, the clearest answer is the one Allen gave at shoot around. He plans to play, and that gives the Cavaliers a cleaner starting point when the season begins against the 76ers.
