Ron Gant is retiring from his job as a news anchor with FOX 5 Atlanta, ending a 14-year run at the station. His last day on the air will be October 21.
The move closes a long chapter for viewers who watched a former Atlanta Braves infielder and outfielder become a familiar local presence after his baseball career. Gant spent 16 seasons in MLB, including his first seven with Atlanta, and his resume included one All Star season, a Silver Slugger award and two 30/30 seasons.
That baseball background is part of why his departure lands as more than a routine personnel change. Gant was a star in the early 1990s with Atlanta, then spent more than a decade in local broadcasting, building a second career that kept him in front of the same audience long after his playing days ended.
What has not been explained is why he chose to step away now, even as he remained a familiar on-air presence. For FOX 5 Atlanta viewers, the significance is simple: after October 21, the station will no longer have Ron Gant in that role, and a 14-year stretch will be over.
