Holland Taylor said she and Sarah Paulson still do not live together fulltime because their work keeps pulling them in different directions. Speaking on The Drew Barrymore Show on Oct. 20, Taylor said the couple, who have been together for nearly 12 years, make time for each other whenever their schedules and geography allow.

That arrangement is part of the way they have built a long relationship around two demanding careers. Taylor said they stay together in New York City when both are there, adding that Paulson often stays at her apartment in the city. In Los Angeles, Taylor said she keeps a separate house from Paulson and that Paulson has been staying with her there as well.

“We do as much time as we possibly can because work takes us apart constantly,” Taylor said, capturing the practical side of a relationship that has never been built around one shared home. She said, “We’re together as much as geography and our jobs let us.”

The living setup also explains why Paulson has not yet moved into her new house in Los Angeles, even though it has been almost a year. Taylor said Paulson has been staying with her instead, leaving the new place empty for now. It is a reminder that for the pair, the issue is not commitment but logistics, with work continuing to dictate where they can be and when.

Taylor first met Paulson at a party in 2005, years before the relationship turned romantic, and the two publicly debuted their relationship in 2015. What stands out now is how little the basic shape of their life has changed: they are together as much as they can be, but not on a full-time basis. For now, the unanswered part is whether Paulson’s new Los Angeles home will finally become hers to live in, or whether their separate homes will remain part of how they make the relationship work.
