League of Legends is reworking Mel’s kit, and the biggest change is simple: Rebuttal will no longer reflect the actual abilities fired at her. The ability will still destroy enemy projectiles and retaliate against them, but the reflect that once defined it is being cut out.
That shift matters now because Rebuttal was one of the mechanics that made Mel feel dangerous in a way opponents could not ignore. It also made her a constant search target whenever players wanted to know whether the kit was being softened or rebuilt, and the answer has now arrived in the form of a direct nerf to the part that caused the most friction.
The developers said they tested many versions in an effort to keep the reflection mechanic alive. The problem, they said, was that any version that did not take up her Ultimate slot would either stay too frustrating for opponents or become something most Mel players would not want to use. That left them with a hard trade: keep the reflect and accept the complaints, or remove it and preserve a kit that could still function cleanly.
Golden Eclipse, Mel’s current Ultimate, sits at the center of that decision. The developers described it as an exciting high point and a core part of her combat pattern as a mage, and said reducing it to a basic ability would be an unacceptable trade. They also said a reflect built around a 90s cooldown would have to be much stronger than the current version, which would only make the frustration worse.
That tension is what made the change inevitable. For most of Mel’s first year, her resting win rate, ban rate, and pick rate were workable, even if she was slightly weaker than par. Over the next year, elite and pro players adapted Mel into their playstyles, and the developers said her kit reached a point where it could no longer be balanced around meaningful power without frustration spilling over.
The old version had its fans. A reflect that could turn a Seraphine Ultimate back into a team charm or let Mel nuke Jhin with his own Fourth Shot was exactly the sort of swing that made her memorable. But it also gave opponents a mechanic they had to respect every time they committed to a spell, and that balance clearly proved too difficult to hold in place. The result is a cleaner Rebuttal and, for now, no release date for when the rework will arrive.
