A pickup truck sped onto a soccer field at Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas, on Saturday afternoon, killing 2 people and injuring 10 others as families watched a youth soccer game nearby. Police said the driver, a 34-year-old woman, was later released while toxicology testing and a mechanical examination of her vehicle were still pending.

The dead were identified as 6-year-old Cole Adrian and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer. Ten people were hurt, ranging in age from 5 to 68, including five children, and police said none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening. An 11th person was taken to a local hospital after medical complications that were not tied to traumatic injuries.

The crash unfolded around 3:25 p.m. local time after the truck, which had been parked near the soccer fields, went onto one of the fields where children were playing and families were gathered. A video obtained by shows the moment the sound of tires cut through the field as spectators were nearby, turning an ordinary Saturday game into a scene of confusion and panic.

Vanessa Trammell was watching her 13-year-old son's game from nearby when she saw the truck cross a neighboring field near the sidelines and strike several people. “It was pure panic,” she said, adding that she did not know what was happening except that people were being hit. Another witness, Isaac, said his father ran to the truck and pulled the driver out so it would not hit anyone else.

That detail sits uneasily beside the police decision to release the driver while the investigation continued. The woman was described as cooperative, but the case remained open because investigators were still waiting on testing and an inspection before deciding what happened and why, and no charges had been filed by Saturday evening.

What remains unanswered is how a parked truck ended up on a youth soccer field in the first place. For the families at Stryker Sports Complex, the immediate facts are already severe enough: two people are dead, 10 others are hurt, and the question now is whether the vehicle itself, the driver, or something else set the disaster in motion.
