The NFL is watching street violence in France as it moves toward next Sunday’s Saints-Steelers game just north of Paris, with a league source saying a change in venue can still be considered if events warrant it. For now, the game remains scheduled for the Stade de France in Saint-Denis.
The timing matters because this is the league’s first-ever game in France, and the public order picture has shifted quickly. On Saturday, marches that drew 500,000 to 800,000 people gave way to masked groups clashing with police, looting businesses and setting fire to private property and public buildings. By Sunday, reports put arrests at 1,800, including 855 in the Paris region.
Last week, the league said the game in Paris is a go and told fans, “We look forward to welcoming fans to Paris later this month.” A league source said the NFL has been working with local authorities and partners on operational and security matters, and that is the standard now: watch the situation, keep the game on the calendar and be ready to move if the ground conditions change. The Saints and Steelers have already shown excitement about taking part in the NFL’s inaugural France game, which is scheduled for next Sunday.
That leaves the league with a narrow but real line to manage. The game can still happen at the Stade de France, but the security threshold is no longer abstract, because the unrest is active and still spreading through the country. President Donald Trump added to the noise on Sunday morning, posting on Truth Social that “France is burning” and that “people with hatred in their hearts” have “shattered that once great country.”
Gayle Benson was pictured looking on before a Saints game against the San Francisco 49ers at Caesars Superdome on Sept. 14, 2025, and she now has a franchise with a Paris-area assignment under scrutiny as France tries to calm its streets. The next marker is simple: if the violence eases, the NFL keeps its first France game where it is. If it does not, the league has already left itself room to make a different call.
