Gayle Benson changed the tone around the Saints on Friday, showing up at practice to embrace Kellen Moore and signal support for him and the coaching staff. The visit suggested no change is imminent, even after her pointed public criticism of the team's 1-4 start earlier in the week.

That earlier message landed hard. Benson told the Greater New Orleans Quarterback Club that words would not restore fans' confidence and that performance had to do it. She said the Saints were 1-4, called that result unacceptable, and said it fell short of what supporters truly deserved. She also said she hears the frustration around the team and the organization, and that fans invest their time, money and hearts in the Saints.

The timing matters because the Saints have been in a slide, losing three straight and entering Sunday ranked 25th in the NFL on defense after allowing 30.2 points per game, the second most in the league. They had also committed eight turnovers during the skid, while injuries left the roster thinner, including rookie wide receiver Jordyn Tyson out with a hamstring injury and Travis Etienne and Kelvin Banks Jr. on injured reserve.

What makes Benson's appearance notable is the contrast. On Tuesday, she sounded frustrated and unsparing about the start. By Friday, she was back on the practice field backing the same coaching staff she had publicly challenged days earlier. That kind of pivot does not erase the concern around the season, but it does draw a line for now: Moore is in Year 2, and the Saints are being given time to answer on the field rather than under the threat of an immediate shakeup.

The larger test is whether that patience holds if the results do not change. Moore finished his first season at 6-11, and the Saints won five of their last eight games, enough to keep belief alive in the building. Benson's latest move says the next judgment will come from performance, not from one harsh week of public remarks.
