Alcorn State is headed to Prairie View, Texas, on Saturday for a 2 p.m. matchup against Prairie View A&M, carrying the momentum of a 63-7 Homecoming win over Arkansas Baptist College. The Braves are looking to keep that pace against a conference opponent they know well, but not one Cedric Thomas has ever faced as a head coach.
The search for this game starts with Omarion Blake. He turned a 70-yard punt return into a touchdown last week and was named SWAC Special Teams Player of the Week, a burst that helped Alcorn State put Arkansas Baptist away early and gave the Braves another playmaker to lean on as the schedule turns back to league play.
That history matters because this is not a one-off meeting. Alcorn State and Prairie View A&M have met 30 times, and the Braves hold an 18-12 edge. They have won six of the last 10 meetings, including a 26-13 victory in Prairie View in 2024, so Saturday’s trip offers another chance to show the series has tilted their way even away from home.
The game will be carried live on the Braves Radio Network on WPRL 91.7 FM, with Charles Edmond handling play-by-play and Cedric Tillman on the sidelines. It will also stream on SWAC TV, giving fans two ways to follow a game that arrives at a useful moment for Alcorn State and for Thomas, who is in his third year leading the Alcorn Football program and owns a 15-16 record with the Purple and Gold.
There is a small wrinkle in that record of familiarity: Thomas has never faced the Bears as a head coach, whether at UAPB or Alcorn. That makes Saturday less routine than the series numbers suggest, because the Braves are dealing with a familiar opponent under a coach who still has not seen this matchup from the other sideline.
What comes next is already set. After Prairie View, Alcorn State returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 31, when it travels to Itta Bena, Miss., to face Mississippi Valley State at 2 p.m. For now, though, the Braves go into Prairie View with recent confidence, a strong series record and one of their most explosive special teams moments of the season still fresh.
