James Madison is back at Bridgeforth Stadium on Saturday, and the timing gives the game extra weight. The Dukes return home for Homecoming weekend after a 27-24 road win over Georgia Southern, and they will do it with an undefeated record and a Sun Belt lead still intact.
That is why Georgia State is the search now. JMU is 6-0 overall and 3-0 in Sun Belt play, while Georgia State arrives at 4-1 and 1-0 after a 42-10 win over Old Dominion on Oct. 3. The game is scheduled for noon in Harrisonburg, Virginia, where the forecast calls for about 50 degrees, winds of 10-15 mph and gusts closer to 30 mph.
The matchup is built around two offenses that have done damage in different ways. Georgia State has averaged 39.4 points and 468.6 yards per game through five contests, scoring at least 30 points in every game so far. It averages 209.6 rushing yards and 259.0 passing yards per game, and Dell McGee has guided the program into his third season with an 8-21 record.
JMU has its own engine. George Pettaway has rushed for 648 yards and six touchdowns, and he just ran for 151 yards against Georgia Southern in JMU's latest game. The Dukes also have a passing game that has been efficient enough to keep opponents honest, with the all-time series already tilted 5-0 in JMU's favor and a 14-7 win in Atlanta last season still fresh in the background.
But the unbeaten start has not erased the issue in the secondary. JMU has allowed 22 passing plays of 20 yards or more, a number that leaves little margin against a Georgia State offense that has produced 24 such plays of its own. That is the kind of split-second problem that can turn a comfortable afternoon into a chase, especially when a team that has scored 30 or more in every game gets a full day to test it.
For JMU, Saturday is less about preserving a perfect record than proving the way it is winning can survive a matchup that asks sharper questions. If the Dukes can keep Georgia State from turning chunk plays into a rhythm, Homecoming weekend stays a celebration. If not, the unbeaten run gets its first real strain before November has even arrived.
