Clemson will host Charleston Southern on Saturday, Oct. 17, at noon ET at Memorial Stadium in Clemson, S.C., returning to the field after last week’s open date. The game will air on ACC Network, and Saturday has been set aside as Military Appreciation Day.

The matchup comes with Clemson sitting at 3-2 and Charleston Southern at 3-3, but the setting gives the game a larger frame than a routine home date. Clemson has played 1,347 all-time games and 300 against teams from South Carolina, and it is 221-66-13 against foes from the state, with a winning record against all 12 Palmetto State opponents it has faced.

That history helps explain why this game is being marked so heavily. Memorial Stadium is named and dedicated in honor of Clemson alumni who made the supreme sacrifice in service of the country, and the Scroll of Honor bears the names of nearly 500 Clemson alumni who died during military service. On Saturday, the national anthem will include a flyover by two F-15s, tying the observance to the setting in a way that goes beyond a standard FBS and FCS meeting.

There is still football underneath all of that ceremony. Tait Reynolds threw for a career-high 295 yards against No. 4 Miami (Fla.) on Oct. 3, and Bryant Wesco Jr. had career highs of nine receptions and 152 receiving yards in that same game, giving Clemson a recent offensive benchmark to build on after the open date. Charleston Southern arrives as the opponent, but Clemson will also be measured against the standard it set in its last outing.

The next step is simple and immediate: Clemson gets a noon kickoff at Memorial Stadium on Saturday, and the real test is whether the Tigers turn a commemorative day and a favorable home setting into cleaner football against Charleston Southern.
