Virginia heads to Dallas as a 9.5-point underdog for a noon game against SMU, carrying the kind of injury list that can change a road trip before the first snap. The Cavaliers and SMU meet Saturday at 12 p.m. on The CW, with Virginia making its second true road trip of the season.

The timing matters because Virginia is coming off an ugly win over Syracuse, one in which it trailed by double digits at halftime before flipping the game in the fourth quarter. That escape kept the Cavaliers moving, but it also left a clear question hanging over Virginia vs SMU: how much offense can it create if Rico Flores Jr. is out, Kam Courtney is out and Corey Costner is out, with Caleb Hardy listed as questionable and Brandyn Hillman doubtful?

Jacobie Henderson should be available, which gives Virginia at least one healthy piece in a secondary that is already being tested by the task in front of it. The Cavaliers cannot afford to make the trip to Dallas one-dimensional, especially against a defense that will be watching for pressure on Kevin Jennings and every sign that Virginia has to lean too hard on a thin passing game.

Jennings has been productive enough to make that a real concern. He has thrown for 1,588 yards and 14 touchdowns this season, with five interceptions, and four of those picks came against Florida State and Louisville. He has also added 69 rushing yards on 32 carries, a reminder that SMU gets more than a stationary pocket passer when the play breaks down.

SMU is 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the ACC, but the record has not come with complete consistency. The Mustangs struggled offensively against Florida State, had trouble containing Louisville's offense and let Missouri State hang around in the fourth quarter before last week's bye. They returned from that break after beating Boston College 25-16, with a three-point lead at halftime, and that uneven run is part of what makes this matchup more interesting than the spread suggests.

For Virginia, the challenge is simple to describe and harder to solve: stay upright on the road, survive the injury list and keep SMU honest enough to avoid letting Jennings and the Mustangs dictate the game. Saturday at noon will show whether the Cavaliers can do that, or whether the gap between a shaky but dangerous home favorite and a battered visitor is wider than the number says.
