Sahra Noor did not show up Thursday night for a scheduled book tour stop at the University of Minnesota Rochester, and the event was called off because of a family emergency. The appearance was set for 6:30 p.m. at the Intercultural Student Center.
The cancellation landed in the same week that Homeland Security Investigations raided Ilhan Omar's DC residence on Monday amid a criminal fraud investigation, which is why the search for Ilhan Omar home search restrictions is rising now. Garden Party Books said the event was off because of a Noor family emergency, and the room was empty when Digital arrived.
Noor's tour stop was meant to promote her memoir, Salt in the Snow: A Somali Immigrant Story, a book that ties her own life to Omar's. Noor came to the United States as a refugee alongside Omar and other family members in the 1990s, and her flyer described her as a poet, storyteller and health system leader.
The part that remains unresolved is how much of Noor's absence was simple family urgency and how much was shaped by the pressure around the case. She was reportedly subpoenaed in relation to the immigration investigation into Omar, while Omar also faces a separate federal probe over possible immigration fraud and financial disclosures. That leaves the Rochester event as more than a missed stop on a book tour; it is a small public sign of how much the fallout around Omar's home search has widened.
For now, no replacement appearance has been announced, and the family emergency is still the only explanation given for Noor's absence.
