Washington Football is heading toward Friday night without much certainty at quarterback. Demond Williams Jr., who hurt his rib in the loss to Iowa, was described Monday as day to day, but Jedd Fisch said he is not under the impression Williams will be available against Purdue.

That matters now because Washington is set to fly to Indiana on Thursday and must know whether Williams or Elijah Brown will guide the offense against Purdue. Brown took all the reps with the starting offense on Monday, a clear sign the staff is preparing for him to take the first snap if Williams cannot go.

Williams left the Iowa game after taking a hit while diving for extra yards with two minutes left in the first half. He went into the medical tent before heading to the locker room, and Brown led the Huskies for the rest of the game. Before leaving, Williams completed six of 11 passes for 69 yards and was sacked four times in what became a 41-24 loss.

Fisch did not sound as if the situation had moved much beyond caution. He said there would have to be a pretty significant change for anything to shift, and he added that he did not want to predict the medical future with four days still left before a decision has to be made. Williams also did not practice Monday.

The alternative has already had a long look. Brown, a transfer from Stanford, finished his first extended action with Washington by going 28 for 39 for 251 yards and three touchdowns. Washington also went six of 10 on third down with Brown at quarterback, and Fisch said Brown did a great job of getting the ball out of his hands and found a primary read most, if not all, of the time.

The backdrop makes the decision even more noticeable. Williams briefly entered the transfer portal in January before announcing his return to Washington two days later, and through six games in 2026 he has posted a 145.7 passer rating that ranked 10th in the Big Ten. For now, though, the safer read is that Brown is preparing as if Friday night will be his game.
