Bucks Vs Pacers preseason finale gives Myles Turner a last look

The Milwaukee Bucks and Indiana Pacers met in the preseason finale on the road at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, IN, giving both teams one last look before the regular season begins. For the Bucks, it was a chance to steady a 1-3 preseason after a blowout loss to the Chicago Bulls. For the Pacers, it was a final test at 1-2 with Tyrese Haliburton back in uniform after recovering from a torn Achilles.

The game mattered because it sat at the edge of the calendar and at the edge of the roster. The Bucks entered trying to build cohesion with a group in which 11 of the 19 rostered players were not with the team at the start of last season, while the Pacers were trying to sort out what a healthier, deeper group could look like with Haliburton alongside Kelly Oubre Jr. and Larry Nance Jr. Tonight also put Myles Turner back in front of his old team, and that carried its own weight after he averaged 10.3 points per game against the Bucks in four games last season.

Preseason numbers do not settle much on their own, but they can show where a team is choosing to live. The Bucks were averaging 45 three-point attempts per game, third-most in the league during preseason, yet they were hitting only 30.6% from beyond the arc. That is the tradeoff every opponent sees coming: volume without enough clean conversion, which makes each half-court possession a little thinner than the last.

The Pacers had already shown a wider range of looks before this finale. They opened by beating the Minnesota Timberwolves, then lost by two points to the Atlanta Hawks and lost by two points in overtime to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Aaron Nesmith went 7-for-9 from the field against Minnesota, Jarace Walker handed out 10 assists in that same game, and Haliburton scored 24 points with three assists in 18 minutes against Oklahoma City. Those results explained why the Pacers arrived looking more settled than a preseason record might suggest.

That is also where the contrast sharpened. The Bucks came in off a blowout loss to Chicago, while the Pacers brought back a star guard and a broader set of options for Rick Carlisle to sort through. Turner’s matchup mattered because he had spent four games against Milwaukee last season as a member of Indiana, shooting.395/.280/.667 while also finishing with six turnovers and four assists in those meetings. He also entered after scoring 19 points, grabbing five rebounds and blocking two shots against Oklahoma City, a reminder that his value in this game was not limited to what he used to do against the Bucks.

Nothing about a preseason finale decides a season, but it does reveal what each side thinks it needs next. For Milwaukee, the next step is making the three-point volume count before the games matter for real. For Indiana, it is turning a healthier roster and Haliburton’s return into something that holds up once the regular season starts.
