Trump rally attack over Epstein shirt draws condemnation in Youngstown

A woman wearing a shirt reading “Release the Epstein Files” was attacked Monday inside the Covelli Centre in Youngstown during President Donald Trump’s rally, briefly interrupting his speech as he watched the scene unfold. At least two men took part in the attack, and uniformed law enforcement officers later escorted the woman away.

Youngstown Mayor Derrick McDowell condemned the violence on Tuesday afternoon, saying senseless political violence has no place in the community or in the democratic process. He said every person attending a public event has the right to be there without fear of assault or threats, and added, “I condemn this senseless conduct unequivocally.”

The video of the confrontation showed one man in a blue baseball cap pushing the woman to the ground before a balding man jumped on her. The balding man appeared to throw multiple punches at her face, pull her hair and put her in a headlock. Trump, who was at the rally to help boost GOP hopes in Ohio, mocked the protester’s weight and said she must have been paid to be there, adding, “You know they’re paid protesters,” and, “That’s a very low-class protester.”

What complicates the case is that the woman did not file a report. Sheriff Jerry Greene said on Wednesday that deputies did not see the beating, so there were no arrests on Monday, and the woman “did not claim to be assaulted, did not claim any injuries.” Greene said, “You need a complaining witness.” Security at the event was provided by the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office and the Secret Service, while Youngstown police were not at the rally. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The attack lands in the middle of a campaign stop already carrying political weight: Trump was in Ohio trying to shore up support in a reliably red state, with Jon Husted trailing Sherrod Brown in one race and Vivek Ramaswamy in a close battle with Amy Acton. The question now is not whether the incident happened — the video and the public reaction have already fixed that — but whether anyone will formally pursue it after the woman chose not to file a report and no arrests were made on Monday.
