Chad Lowe returned to Instagram on Thursday for the first time since the Sept. 29 death of his 13-year-old daughter, Fiona, and used his Stories to share a message about peace and hope. The post marked his first visible step back onto the platform after the family’s loss.

The message came only three days after Fiona’s death was announced and two days after the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner ruled her manner of death a suicide. Lowe did not add a lengthy statement of his own in the post that surfaced Thursday; instead, he shared a spiritual note from author and psychologist Gerry Hussey, a choice that fit the quiet, reflective tone he has used since the family said, “We are deeply heartbroken by the loss of our beloved Fiona.”

Fiona was the second of Lowe and Kim Painter’s three daughters. The family also shares Mabel, 17, and Nixie, 10, and the grief around Fiona’s death has been visible across the family’s posts since the announcement. John Owen Lowe shared Emily Dickinson’s “Hope Is the Thing With Feathers” after the death was made public, while Chuck posted a photo of Fiona with the words, “Rest in peace sweet Fiona.”

Mabel’s post on Oct. 3 showed how closely the family is still moving through the loss. She wrote, “I love you so much fiona,” and said she wished Fiona’s “short time here was easier” and hoped her “mind is at ease now.” She added that she would “honor you forever and keep your memory alive,” a message that made plain how personal and recent the wound remains.

That is what gives Lowe’s return to Instagram its weight. The family is still absorbing a death that has already been publicly ruled a suicide, yet his first move back to the platform was not a broad public statement or an explanation. It was a spiritual message meant to speak in the language of comfort rather than disclosure, leaving the central question untouched: how a family carries a loss this sudden when the public record now includes both mourning and a medical ruling. For now, Lowe has answered only the part he chose to share.
