Two people were killed and three others were left in critical condition after gunfire erupted around 5:15 p.m. Thursday at a Circle K convenience store on Colonel Glenn and South University in Little Rock. Police said the shooting left five people hit in all, turning a busy gas station into the scene of a mass shooting in a matter of moments.

Mayor Frank Scott Jr. spoke to reporters at the scene and called the shooting “completely senseless.” That is the word that fits the aftermath, too: two people dead, three more fighting for their lives in the hospital, and a public place suddenly marked by violence. For Little Rock, the question now is not whether the shooting was serious; it is who was involved and how a routine evening at a gas station became a fatal burst of gunfire.

Police said they had multiple suspects in custody, but they had not yet identified anyone involved. They also said they used Flock cameras to track two cars that raced away from the scene after the shooting. That leaves a gap in the center of the case: eyewitnesses told KATV that multiple shooters were involved, while investigators had not yet named anyone or explained what started the gunfire.

For now, the facts point to a fast-moving attack with more than one person caught in its path and a police response that is still trying to piece together who fired, who fled and why. The dead and the critically injured are known; the rest is the work that has to be done next.
