Miami University gave an all-clear around 2:40 p.m. Thursday after reports of shots fired on campus triggered an emergency response, and officers found no evidence of gunfire.

The call began around 2 p.m., when the Butler County Sheriff’s Office received a report of possible gunfire in or near McGuffey Hall. Miami University Police Department officers then received reports of shots fired from a student in a classroom, prompting a RedHawk alert to students, faculty and staff that warned of an active threat and told them to avoid the area.

That alert briefly pushed the campus into a safety posture that can upend a normal afternoon in a matter of minutes. Officers searched the building and the surrounding area and found no active threat, and the university said there were no injured parties in the area.

The reporting did not fit neatly with what investigators heard from witnesses. Multiple people told officers the noise seemed more consistent with firework, and the university later said there was no evidence of gunfire. The gap between the initial reports and what officers found is what drove the fast-moving response and the quick stand-down once the search was complete.

For Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, the important fact is not just that the alert went out, but that it was canceled within about 40 minutes after the campus was checked and no threat was found. What remains unanswered is what produced the noise that set off the scare in the first place.
