Brewers Players: Garrett Mitchell turns durability into a 145-game breakthrough

Garrett Mitchell finally gave the Milwaukee Brewers what they had never been able to count on from him before: a full season. He played in 145 regular-season games in 2026, more than he managed in the 2022-2025 seasons combined, and turned a career defined by stops and starts into one of the team’s clearest durability breakthroughs.

That is why his name still matters now. Mitchell, who was drafted by the Brewers with the No. 20 pick in the 2020 Major League Baseball draft, had never appeared in more than 69 games in any season before 2026, and the club had spent years trying to cover center field around him. When he was out, Jackson Chourio, Isaac Collins, Brandon Lockridge and Blake Perkins filled in there, after earlier turns for Joey Wiemer, Tyrone Taylor and Jonathan Davis.

Mitchell’s path to this point had already included more than one injury interruption. He missed the start of 2024 after a fractured left hand in spring training, returned on July 1, then played 25 games before shoulder surgery ended that season. He also delivered a postseason swing that Brewers fans remember, driving a go-ahead home run in the bottom of the eighth inning against the New York Mets in the NL Wild Card Series, a reminder of what his speed and defense can mean when he is actually on the field.

Pat Murphy said the uncertainty around Mitchell may have been part of why the team was not picked early on to do much in the regular season, and he was right to frame it that way. For years, the Brewers had to build around a center field spot that kept changing hands, and Mitchell’s 2026 season suggested that the answer might finally have arrived. He also helped his case at the plate, finishing with a.255/.342/.469 line, while committing three errors.

But the cleanest story still came with one wrinkle. Mitchell was not named among the 2026 Gold Glove finalists, even though Pete Crow-Armstrong had three more errors and still earned a nomination. The Brewers did announce Jackson Chourio as a 2026 Gold Glove finalist, which only sharpened the contrast: Mitchell had the workload, the games and the defensive burden, yet not the finalist tag.

He also made his strongest case in Game 4 of the National League Division Series against the Padres, when he established himself while the Brewers were leading by two before Manny Machado launched a ball. That was the kind of moment the club had been chasing for years from center field. The remaining question is no longer whether Mitchell can help the Brewers; it is whether the one season they finally got from him can hold up long enough to make center field his for good.
